So up to this point I figured that we would have a VERY late harvest this year due to “Kitten infestation 2009″ (not ours, our girls are both fixed and indoors) a feral momma decided to have her litter of 12 (TWELVE) in our yard and camped out there for some time (till this week actually).. while the babies were cute (aren’t all kittens) they weren’t sweet and cuddly and well… KEETANS. Anyhow that ’s another story for another time. The beasties tore the crap out of my beds that had seedlings going well (they were going well before the bed became a litter box/playground). The only thing they didn’t touch was the Pepermint plant and my broccoli and corn. Oh and the tomato plant and my potatoes in the 5-gal buckets!!
Which I dug into today as the plants had died back and lookie what I got
They aren’t really that huge… but five perfect red potatoes
And then the little teeny ones are going back in the dark space to go to seed… once more..
So not such a bad start to the season… I am just happy we live in an area with a climate that is growth/harvest friendly year round
Are they a fruit really???
Anyhow, the first batch of seedlings went into the bed today. I started some Lentils, White, Kidney and Black Beans last week inside and they all sprouted up FAST.. so fast that I had to put them in the beds or they would have NOT been happy all cramped up in their egg-crate seed staring thingies.
Tomorrow I will start some Tomatoes, Watermelon (Brap’s request), Corn, Onion, 2 kinds of Squash (Italian and Yellow),Spinach, and Onions with the same egg carton method as I am having better luck with that than the tp tube method (Which really could just be my fault for over watering and creating more of a swamp than a proper growing environment).

It appears that a food dehydrator, vaccum sealer and possibly a good juicer are all in the near future for us here at Allgood Farms (meaning Brap and myself).
Onward with the mini-homestead I say..
Happy New Year to you all…
It’s been a while I know I know… rest assured the garden is still there, albeit a little bare with the colder season and the fact that I haven’t learnt how to winter garden yet.
I do have about four Broccoli plants still going and getting bigger and healthier every day. The Mint and Basil are doing great and yes, I actually put some seeds in last weekend with some hope that I would get “something”.
Went out yesterday to water it, lo and behold… a sprout!!!!! I think it’s a tomato from where I planted it (ya I know.. bad bad me for not labeling my garden… I plan on it really I do!).
We really are blessed to live where we do, no snow, the coldest it gets is in the high 30’s at night and only for a couple weeks…
I am 37 years old, and today I am truly feeling my age.
BUT the raised bed is IN… and filled, even has some transplanted items in it already.
Yesterday was the day I put down big garbage bags, then the cinder blocks and finally 8 LARGE bags of planting mixture 2 cubic feet each. I still need about a bag and a half to get all the blocks filled with dirt for their planting purposes, but my body is saying BASTA (enough) for this week. While I was outside Brap came out to tell me that our toilet seat had decided to spontaneously combust (last time I EVER purchase anything from Target quite frankly) and since I needed three more bags of dirt (I only got 5 when the cinder blocks were purchased) another trip to OSH was needed. So now we have a VERY sturdy, made in the USA, and MUCH less expensive than the made in China POS from Target toilet seat, the raised bed is in. All that needs to be done now is start the seedlings in their little cups which will probably be done tomorrow night, as I am giving my poor body an entire day to come down from all the exertion it has endured this weekend *ow*.
Oh as for pics.. forthcoming in another post I am sure.. never got around to taking them before and during so you will just have to see the “after”.

Cinder blocks and dirt have been procured (took two trips from OSH to get 18 cinder blocks to the house, thankfully we live about a mile and a half from the nearest one… Bob, the car, is getting a WELL deserved bath and vacuuming for his hard work indeed!). Everything is stacked and ready to be put together in the morning (otherwise known as when it cools down as it has been over 85 here after noon ALL week, yes the end of October and 85.. crazy I know!). This afternoon I am making seed cups to start some new veggies in the mudroom (the room that has a HUGE window with constant light).
I am sure there will be pics of the great assemblage of the “official” farm tomorrow
Even Brap is going to help out (what a champ he is that husband of mine)
Oh and strange as it may seem, the one thing I am ticked pink about is my new 75 foot garden hose and hook for the side of the house.. 75 feet of hose means clean car without going to the wash… using the sprinkler on the front lawn (we have to keep it looking nice as per the landlord) rather than watering it at random when the other plants get watered.. 75 feet *sigh* what’s a girl to do
Fall really is upon us isn’t it. I was out watering and pruning back dead-bits yesterday when I realized soon it will be time to try and plant my winter garden. The raised beds WILL be going in in a week (thanks to my hard work at um.. work, and a generous company that recognizes those of us that bust hiney on a regular basis) and with the beds will come a removable covering for those nights when it just gets too darned cold for the plants to be happy (yes pics will be forthcoming).
Right now the romas are nearly ready for picking. The green is starting to get it’s first blush of red. My lone canetelopue gets bigger by the day (about half the size of a tennis ball right now) and the corn just keeps on keepin on.
You may remember this from one of the previous posts (not too long ago actually). Well last night we harvested and ate (steamed with nothing else on it) this lovely squash. It appears that there are three more squash just waitng to grow into something as beautiful and tasty as this… *waits*.
Now if someone can just get my Romas to turn red we will be set
As you can see, things are growing right along in the garden. Had to snap a couple pics for posterity as well as for self reference (a-la the tomatoes).
What do you think???
This just pisses me off to no avail! But also proves the true evil of this company.
I guess it’s just time to put more research into where our seeds come from for our food…
